December 12, 2009-- The father of Susan Powell, the mother who was reported missing on Monday said about his son-in-law, Joshua Powell "I don't see him as capable of harming her. I'm kind of concerned that all the focus is on him."
Charles Cox, Susan Powell's father, was wiping his tears at a 24-hour-fast for Susan Powell at the LDS Church's Hunter Central Stake Center.  About one hundred friends, neighbors and family showed up to pray and hope for Susan Powell's return.  Susan Powell's husband and two children were there too.
Friends, family and supporters were handing out fliers to spread the word about her disappearance.  Joshua Powell was outside the Energy Solutions Arena giving people fliers as well.  He did not offer any comment about his wife's case.
The police are still investigating the case.  According to the police, Joshua Powell is not a suspect in the case.  He told the police he was camping with his children at the time of his wife's disappearance.  Police are unable to verify if he actually went camping because of some recent snow which covered evidence of the camping.
If you or someone you know have information about Susan Powell's disappearance, please call 911.  You can also spread the news about Susan Powell by clicking share this on the bottom of the article.  For a flier to print click here.

It seems like they always look at the husband, which is sad.

Great report. I really hope they find her soon for her father's sake.

Glad her husband is not a suspect; I hope they find her soon.

They always start with the closest person to the victim and then work their way from there. I think looking at him is very smart in this case though, because it's very odd that at the same time he goes off with the kids, she also goes missing. Most 2 year and 4 year olds are tired and sleeping at midnight, and the parents both had to work the next morning. So to take the boys with him instead of leaving them in the comfort of their beds with mom home, out to the freezing desert to test a generator is the strangest situation I have heard ever. Even if he's not guilty, his behavior with 2 young children is awful. I hope they collect enough evidence to find this poor woman.

Extremely suspicious, to say the least. I'm sure the cops are zeroing right in on him. They may not call him a 'suspect' or even a 'person of interest' yet, but they've got him under their microscope. I predict they'll arrest him for her murder within weeks.
  • Cindy Grayson - Seattle Free Stuff Examiner 2 years ago

So sad, I hope they find her. People are going to suspect her husband and it will not be easy for him. There are many online crime forums where people have been dissecting his life for all to see.

Mark my words, he is the number 1 suspect for police..they won't say that beause then he will lawyer up. I hope it isn't him, but I will be shocked if he turns out not to be involved..it's just the sad facts of life that those who proclaim to love us, are theones most likely to hurt us.

The husband is always the first one on the list.

This whole situation is strange. Why in the world would any one with an ounce of sense, take two small kids out to the house in sub-freezing temperatures at night. And, if Susan left the house on her own free will, why did she leave her cell phone and other personal items?

Things that make you go hmmm...he took to pre-schoolers to the freezing desert, his wife is missing, there are fans blowing on a wet spot??? If there is no hole in the roof, obviously something was cleaned. A normal spill or light cleaning does not require 2 fans. You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes for this one. Investigators will fine Susan's DNA in that wet spot. I would be on it. He is a suspect, obviously.

There is REASON to look at the husband.
-He took the 1 and 4 year old on a spontaneous camping trip after midnight into the freezing cold on a Sunday night?
    - He didn't show up at work the next day because he "forgot what day it was"??
    - A wet spot with fans on it was found in the house by police that day.
    - coincidentally at the same time his wife goes missing and he is vague to give any details (police have said he couldn't even remember what she was wearing the last time he supposedly saw her)?!?!?
Why WOULDN'T you focus on the husband?
  • sherlock holmes 2 years ago

unlike the scott peterson case where peterson premeditated killing his wife to be with his mistress this looks more like they got in a fight and he killed her and its pretty obvious by his camping excuse this wasnt thought out.whether it was an accident like knocking her down and maybe she hit her head or if he just lost it and beat her to death or strangled her might only be determined when they find the body.but just like the peterson case you will see him arrested when they find the body.i hope they find it fore the sake of the girls father becuase unfortunatly the father is making a good character witness for him saying things like he doesnt think hes capable of killing her to the media.you can bet his lwayers will be using that if they try to convict him without a body
  • Cali 2 years ago

this is really weird. Seriously, who would go out in the middle of a freezing night with two little boys to go camping...that's nuts! I hate thinking it, but I think the husband is involved. God Bless Susan where ever she is
  • Jennifer 2 years ago

It doesn't take a degree to figure this one out. If the dad really did go camping in freezing temperatures, and if the mother left without her personal belongings, then in fact the dad did it. He isn't a suspect, he did it. It might take another year before we hear the guilty verdict, but use some common sense.
  • Ryan 2 years ago

First off, the kids should be taken away for him taking them out in such a dangerous condition. What did they do/eat for 2 days while they were 'camping?'? Anyone with children knows how difficult it would be with a 1 year old on a camping trip in the freezing cold out in the middle of no where. The dude acts like he is just a little pansy so I think an outside might have been paid to take care of Susan.
  • KHB 2 years ago

I don't understand why the police did not lean on this guy more, early in the case when there was still a chance she might be alive. This really is heartbreaking. I hate to convict the guy before he even gets arrested but this stinks on ice. Unfortunately these kids are going to lose both their parents all in one swoop. I guess all I can do is hold out hope. And pray and pray and pray.
  • Eric 2 years ago

There cannot be a suspect because there is no crime yet. It's kind of hard to isssue a warrant for someone being missing. Until they determine there has been a crime, he will not be a suspect. His willingness to speak with them will weigh into it when they find her. If there is foul play, it won't look good. Noone has spoken of his state of being. Did he seem concerned or nonchalant? Did he offer any ideas as to her whereabouts? You'd think a husband would be very concerned if his wife went missing, especially with 2 young children. Did he say they had been having problems, at least as an excuse for his lack of knowledge about anything. Did they even know each other? I think the reporters aren't doing a very good job so far. I hope this turns out to be much ado about nothing.

i hope they hang the s.o.b. he's as guilty as sin
  • Elizabeth Kelly 2 years ago

He really OUGHT to be a suspect, though. It's negligent to not look at the people close to someone in a situation like this.

Ok people, I call it like I see it! It's called COMMON SENSE! there is No such thing as a coincident. Everything happens for a reason. A woman goes missing, & it just so happen that it's at the exact same time that Her husband just up & takes their 2 & 4 year old on a Camping trip, @ 12 am, in The snow, in 10 degree weather! When both patents had to work the next day! WOW!!! He did right to get a Lawyer, because he's gonna need 2 lawyers in a minute! His @ss is grass! He is Hiding something, that's for sure! & I'm willing to bet the house on it that what he's hiding is his wife's Body! They need to look close to where he said he went camping!
  • Sandy 2 years ago

This stinks to high heaven and I'm betting the husband NEEDS to be looked at and badgered until he talks. His story makes no sense plain and simple. I can't see anyone claiming they took two small children "camping" in a van in the snow on a Sunday night..

I know the couple personally when they lived in Washington. My husband was good friends with him before we got married and moved away. He and his wife came to our house on occasion for social gatherings. Josh is a nice guy with and not so much common sense with certain things or a lot of good social skills. Susan is an amazing talented woman who nags Josh. hmmmm Explains half the marriages out there. Their marital problems were no more than what most of American marriages have.

Well, I'm sure he's a suspect. It's not news that in Mormon households there is a lot of tension. Their religion requires quite a bit from their women, with very little relief and whole lot of guilt. If she wasn't toeing the Mormon line, hubby may have gotten a little upset.
  • Jason 2 years ago

"It's not news that in Mormon households there is a lot of tension." That's news to me! I've lived in a Mormon household since birth. I've also observed enough other homes to notice, if anything, less tension in a Mormon household. I understand your generalization and agree it may occur in some homes, but hardly to the extent of becoming characteristic, and far from being worse than in other homes.

Why are the children in his care? This man for sure knows where she can be found !! I think, it was a spur of the moment decision..sooo he decides he didn't want to start his new job on monday morning !!
  • FM 2 years ago

He did it...case closed. It doesn't take a genius to figure this one out.
  • FM-2 2 years ago

I hate to think that those kids are going be without there parents, but based on the story, evidence and lack of cooperation by JP, he “F” uckin did it...case closed. Remove the kids and send them to the grandparents. When you see his face, he looks sad because he is, he crying non-stop, but that's not because his wife is gone, it's because he's going to jail for life. I'm sorry, family or not, if you “F” up that bad, you deserve what’s coming to you. Jackass should have thought about those kids before he whacked her or had it done. But either way the end result is those kids minds are going be twisted for the rest of there lives.
If this case was here in LA it would have been closed a week ago. At the very least, detain him for the max until he talks. Everything in this case points to him so far. I'm not trying to be “F” ucked up, but reality is what it is. So handle it and stop wasting tax payer’s money searching for a woman they won't find, at least where he said he was/went.
  • Jess 2 years ago

My Aunt's husband was raised in a Mormon family. His family no longer talks to him (for decades) because he decided not to adopt the Mormon religion and marry a fellow Mormon. They will talk to his non-Mormon wife and kids, but not him. Even though thats just one circumstance, I call that tense and extreme. Unless the police come up with some seriously compelling evidence its probably going to take at least a month to charge him. I'm not the type to judge a suspect before their fair trial, but who takes their small children camping in the freezing COLD at MIDNIGHT on the same night their wife goes missing and then flees the area two weeks after? A guilty man. If my husband, the father of my children and the man I love, went missing I would stay at my house until the day I died hoping he would come home some day.
