Josh and Boys Are Back But Where's Mom?: Demons and Saints

Josh and Boys Are Back But Where's Mom?: Demons and Saints

Previously:  Josh says his wife went to bed, and after the giant red stain had been cleaned with the rug cleaner and box fans set up to dry, he decided that moment to take a midnight camping trip in a snowstorm to the Pony Express Trail, a 6 hour drive away. Josh says mother Susan stayed at home in bed, but the boys still talk about the trip where Mommy was in the trunk, went out to look for gems, but did not come back. One man says they saw the minvan driving in the desert snow, flashing headlights if he got too close.

Free Breakfast at Sandy Comfort Inn
As the sun rose on the Monday morning of December 7, 2009, Robin Leanne Snyder, 53 worked at the Comfort Inn in the town of Sandy, about 17 miles or a half hour south of Salt Lake City. She saw Josh Powell and the boys showed up for a free continental breakfast at the Comfort Inn which was set up for people who stayed there, but which random travelers could also take advantage of at times. (myself, I would NEVER drop in at a hotel I wasn't staying at...)  She recalled “Charlie looked right up at me and he says, ‘Do you know what happened to my mom?’ So I say, ‘No, what happened to your mom?’”  But before she could wait for answer, she had to step away to get some more coffee. She went back to look for the boy, but Josh Powell, seemed to hide his face down as his boy started to talk to strangers had hustled away his boys. She remarked to Associated Press “He didn’t even give the kids time to eat their sweet rolls - each had a small bite on them." There was no mention that they had ever checked into a hotel. It appears that Josh made an early exit as the boys might expose his little midnight errand.

After she saw Powell hit the news, she called a police tipline, but never got called back. By the time she got an interview by West Valley detectives, the security video tapes for the day had been recorded over.

Josh, Susan And the Boys Are All Missing

Back in West Valley, Susan was missed at her stockbroker job at the Wells Fargo bank. They got no answer at all on her cellphone, which was really strange for Susan who had always been a model employee.  Workers at the the day care center also realized something was amiss when Charlie and Braden were overdue as well. They called Joshua's mother, Terrica who lived nearby, and she called the police.

Break In

The police break into their home and find no one. However, they did notice two fans were blowing on a wet spot. Now it's said that a carpet cleaner was found in the house. (cleaning blood from carpet? Did they test for blood? When did he rent carpet cleaner? Josh later says the stain was red, did the police notice any stain or color? No metion of this in press accounts)
While searching the house, investigators found two fans drying a wet area on the rug, where a red stain had been removed. Josh Powell said that his wife had been cleaning the rug before she disappeared. (After she went to bed??)

I don't think it was her mother, was it? All the way in Puyallup? I thought it was the boys' day care provider. She was there on the scene when the officer broke in. Hmm. I can't remember. Maybe the babysitter called Susan't mom who called police?

You're right.
It was either Josh's mother or sister Susan Graves.

"her father, Chuck Cox, says police found the wet spot on the living room floor when they first broke into Powell's house to see if the family was OK. Two fans were blowing on the spot.
Cox says he heard about it from a family member that was with police when they broke in."

If I was going to leave my children and my husband to "abscond" to Brazil with a lover, the very LAST think I would even consider would be spot cleaning the rug. Really?? She had a final jolt of domesticity before abandoning her family. Uh-huh.

Haven't posted much on this thread, but I am just fascinated by this case now. I watched the clip of JP -- good Lord. I think he is very -- strange.

I lived in a miserable marriage which took years to escape because I was afraid. Spot cleaning the carpet was the LAST thing on my mind when I finally fled. (with my children, btw)

A piece of carpet was cut out and sent for testing.
Results unknown.

It's just one piece of the puzzle.

to add: a LARGE piece of carpet--like half the room!--according to a witness who "helped" him move out.

A passport. Steven Koecher's is here and accounted for. Not sure if Susan had one, and if she did, where it is.

Of course.
If she had one, it'd have been listed as "left behind" with her other ID.

Oh, wait!
On the night that Susan suddenly decided to run away, she simply went to "All-Night Fake Passport and ID Service", and then got money from the payday loan store next door. Silly me.

I thought it was Josh's sister, but don't quote me on that. I do know that the latest timeline recently posted of that morning was not stated properly. The had the daycare woman beginning to "search" for JP and SP much later that morning, when she really started somewhere around 7am. Susan and/or Josh would drop the kids off normally around 6:30. It was 3+ hours from the time the daycare woman suspected something was wrong and the time they called LE for a welfare check. JMO, but the timeline for this is "off". Found it. There more timeline; I just listed the morning of her missing.

Monday, December 7, 2009: Family and friends first believed the entire Powell family had succumbed to carbon-monoxide poisoning when the couple didn't go to work, didn't call to let anyone know they weren't going to work, and didn't drop the children off to daycare. Timeline (times are approximate):

6:30 a.m.: Regular time children are dropped off to daycare
7 a.m. : Debbie Caldwell, the Powell's daycare provider and Susan's friend, calls Susan on cell and at work; no answer; cell phone went straight to voice-mail
8 a.m.: Debbie calls Josh' work; she was told he had not come in to work
8:50 a.m. : Debbie drove to Susan's home; pounded on the door; there was no answer
9 a.m.: Josh's mom, Terri, called (responding to Debbie's call - she lives with Jennifer, Josh's sister, and overheard the phone message Debbie left for Jennifer stating she could not get in contact with Josh or Susan)
Jennifer calls Chuck and Judy Cox to ask if they'd heard from Susan or Josh
Mid-morning: Jennifer, Terri, and Debbie discuss possible carbon-monoxide poisoning
Police were called to check on the family
No one answered the door; police broke front window and entered the house
Police found Susan's purse and keys and 2 box-type fans blowing on a wet spot on the carpet
They found the family mini-van was missing
Family surmised the family might have gone for a drive and possibly been involved in an accident

Steven Powell also spoke to the Tribune, saying that the curious wet spot found by police on the carpet in his son and daughter-in-laws home after her disappearance was from a clean-up that Susan Powell had done on a red stain that he said was "probably juice or something."
That's a statement that's going to bite Josh in the butt.

Did she not go to bed?
Why was she cleaning carpet?
"Probably juice.." (said by someone a thousand miles away)

It would have been better if Josh had said HE cleaned up a spill.

Are we allowed to post links to youtube? I just watched this interview, 'Update on Missing Mother From Utah Susan Powell'. Between 1:30 and 1:40 the news report shows video of the Powell's residence. Two panels of the front bay window are broken out and covered with cardboard. Could these have been broken during a scuffle? Was this brought up before?

As I recall, the police broke at least one of those windows when they did the welfare check at the babysitter's request. They thought perhaps the Powell family fell victim to carbon monoxide poisoning. When they went inside, they found nobody home and the big, mysterious wet spot on the carpet with a fan set up to blow it dry. Why in the world would Susan clean the carpet if she was leaving her family? Why in the world would Josh clean the carpet right before heading out on a camping trip? I can only think of one viable scenario for the wet carpet...

Thank you for reminding me about the fan on the wet carpet spot. Let me rephrase an earlier post:

Are we to believe that 2 toddlers are taken camping at midnight in a snowstorm, and then coincidentally, on the very same night, mom runs off and changes her identity, leaving her kids forever--but first she spot cleans the carpet ?

She was reported missing the next day after she failed to show up for her stockbroker job. She had been seen by friends at church and at dinner the day before.

Searching for Susan Powell: Neighbor describes husband's odd behavior
BY SHEENA MCFARLAND THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE PUBLISHED DECEMBER 23,
Neighbors called all day Dec. 7 after his wife was reported missing, and when they finally talked to Joshua Powell, it took him two hours to get home. "He just said he was driving around West Valley City," Peterson said. "He wasn't in a big hurry to get home and find his wife. It's just a really crappy situation."

Date: December 7, 2009 Time: 1PM Monday

http://www.examiner.com/family-in-seattle/susan-powell-and-joshua-powell-neighbor-tim-peterson-provides-new-information-about-the-powell-s When police responded to the call and no one answered the door they thought the family might be dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. They broke through a window and once inside discovered no one was home. There was no sign of previous forced entry. The family van was missing but Susan’s personal belongings, including her purse and cell phone, were still there. They saw two fans blowing at a wet spot on the floor.
(They evidently only have one car, so how would Susan have "run away" without anyone else seeing her? she didn't take a taxi or drive her own car. Were any footprints left? Did they have dogs check for her scent if she stepped out the door or walked around  the house?  Clearly they didn't check)

Apparently Susan did not have a *second* car. No APB out for a car - only her cell phone & purse were found in the home...no mention of car keys. Lucky for the police - deciding to break into the house - believing the family was perhaps suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. Otherwise - the perp would have had time to dispose of the wet carpet, the purse and the cell phone.

The hours after Susan Powell's disappearance

March 9th, 2010 @ 11:35am
Story compiled with contributions from Andrew Adams and Shara Park.

KSL Newsradio has learned Josh Powell may have spent time at a strip club, just hours after Susan Powell was reported missing. But despite numerous eyewitness accounts, police are skeptical (why?? - are the police in on it?) that the man was indeed JoshPowell.

Workers at the South Salt Lake strip club, Duces Wild, say a man they believe was Josh made sexually-explicit comments and advances, yelled, yanked away a customer's drink and ultimately didn't tip the workers when he visited the day after Susan was last seen.

Bartender Liz Burkholder, who later identified Powell in several photos from police, says the man tried to make advances toward her, take her picture -- a no-no in strip clubs -- and then was rude and vulgar when she declined.

"He wanted me to come over and bend down so he could see my boobs, kept telling me I had a nice [behind], telling me to come down there, he wouldn't hurt me, bend over," Burkholder said in an exclusive interview with KSL Newsradio. "At first it was advances, and then when I wouldn't go back down there it was just rude and vulgar… It was embarrassing because that's not normal -- even in a strip club. I stayed away from him as much as possible."

The alleged appearance at the club happened the afternoon of Dec. 7, when police were still looking for Susan, Josh and their two children. They had been reported missing that morning after a day care provider grew concerned because the children had not been dropped off on schedule. Josh showed up to his home with the kids between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. that evening.

The man strip club employees identified as Powell came in around 2 p.m. wearing a hat. He ordered two beers and a shot and left after about an hour-and-a-half to two hours. Burkholder says customers moved away from him and actually applauded as he walked out the door.

His behavior was "outlandish," club owner Rydell Mitchell said.

"Yelling out loud, saying weird things," Mitchell described. "He yelled at one of my customers and said, ‘You don't know what it's like -- you don't have any idea what kind of day I've had.'"

Burkholder says Powell later grabbed a drink from another patron.

"Acting really peculiar like that -- it just made everybody really uncomfortable," Mitchell said.

Mitchell says he wasn't sure if the man identified as Powell was there for the drinks or the dancers, but he believes it was for both.

"He didn't sit on the stage or anything like that. I guess he wasn't tipping the girls, from what I do understand," Mitchell said. "Not sure if he was sitting over by the bar and maybe watching them -- trying to get a free show."

Burkholder says a customer later recognized Powell on the news and called West Valley police. She says investigators showed up several days after the ordeal.

"I wouldn't want the authorities finding out I was in a strip club the day after my wife came up missing," said former police officer and UtahDetective.com owner David Lundberg.

Lundberg says the alleged encounter raises suspicion, although the question remains how much this may add to the investigation.

"The circumstances as far as the lighting in a club like that, the sound, the noise, where he was moving around, how well people actually paid attention to him -- eyewitness evidence has been thrown out because it's not as positive as they'd like to see it," he said.

West Valley Police Captain Tom McLachlan says the tip was investigated and the statements of the eyewitnesses "were taken into account." Tuesday he said based on eyewitness accounts alone, they cannot confirm it was Josh.

"I'm not trying to discredit the individuals involved but sometimes, you know, eyewitness accounts can be mistaken, so you can't rely wholly on that," McLachlan said. "You try to verify, and at this point we are not able to verify though independent means that that was Josh."

Mitchell says surveillance cameras were not working in the club at the time.

"I don't have any idea why anybody would say something like that," Powell's attorney, Scott Williams, told KSL Monday. "We have no need to respond."

Powell has said he took the children camping near Simpson Springs and the Pony Express Trail in Tooele County beginning around 12:30 a.m. the morning of Dec. 7. His alleged appearance at Duces Wild would have been more than 13 hours after that time and roughly one to two hours before he returned home with the children.

Police doubt story of Josh Powell at strip club
Employees say he was in bar on the day his wife disappeared

By Pat Reavy
Deseret News
Published: Tuesday, March 9, 2010 9:45 p.m. MST

SOUTH SALT LAKE — West Valley police say they doubt a man seen at a strip club on the day Susan Cox Powelldisappeared was her husband.

"We're aware (of the story). We investigated it. We talked to the people involved. We don't feel that was Josh (Powell)," said West Valley Police Capt. Tom McLachlan.
On Dec. 7, a man walked into Duces Wild, 2750 S. 300 West, and acted very belligerent.

"He was just being real loud and making a nuisance of himself," said club co-owner Kimberly Cooper. "He was saying things like, 'You don't know what kind of day I've had.' "

The man, who was wearing a beanie cap, was loud, tried to drink other patrons' drinks and, at one point, was questioned by other patrons about whether he was taking photographs inside the club with his cell phone, a violation of club rules,

"He stood out because he was being annoying to everybody," Cooper said. "Everyone applauded when he left."

When he wasn't walking around, the man sat at the bar by himself, mumbling, and then burst out yelling without warning, Cooper said.

"We call it bar Tourette's," she said.
Story continues below

The man yelled several times at a female bartender and made vulgar comments toward her. There were a handful of people in the bar at the time, Cooper said, most of them regular patrons. This man was not.

The man was in the club between 4 and 5 p.m., Cooper said. Other patrons from the club have told KSL Radio that the man was in the bar about 2 p.m.

Police say Josh Powell showed up at his West Valley house about 5 p.m. on that day, after he said he had gone camping in remote Tooele County with his two young boys. He said he had last seen his wife about 17 hours earlier.

Security cameras at the club were not working that day. No one noticed or can remember a van in the club parking lot, let alone one with two young children inside, Cooper said.

As a new state law requires, the club scans drivers' licenses of patrons as they enter. Cooper said the man who entered that afternoon would have had his license scanned. That data is stored in the machine for seven days, she said.

After Susan Powell's disappearance began to make headlines, one of the bartenders and at least two patrons remembered the belligerent man who was in the bar days earlier. Police were called and detectives went to the club and to the homes of some of those witnesses to interview them, Cooper said. They were too late to check the scanning device. But no one that day can remember checking an ID that said "Josh Powell," she said.

Cooper said there were at least three people who took close notice of the man. One was the bartender. She told the co-owner that she picked Josh Powell out of a photo lineup that police gave her at her house.

"She said, 'This was the guy who was in the bar making such an a-- of himself,' " Cooper said. "She said she positively ID'd him. She said she 'was sure' that was him."

One of the patrons, however, told Cooper that he was only mostly sure now that it was Powell but not 100 percent convinced. A third regular patron, she said, did not believe the man was Josh Powell, saying that this man's hair was longer than Josh Powell's.

Based on what she has heard from employees and patrons in her club, Cooper admitted Tuesday that she had her doubts, and with the beanie cap the man was wearing that day, it could have been a case of mistaken identity.

"I'm concerned maybe it wasn't him," she said. "There is a kid that comes in here once in a while that looks an awful lot like him."

Shelby Gifford, family spokeswoman for Chuck and Judy Cox, Susan Cox Powell's parents, had very little to say about the strip club story.

"Until something is substantiated, we're not going to comment on it," she said.

Josh Powell's attorney, Scott Williams, also declined comment.

"I don't have any idea why anybody would say something like that," he told KSL. "We have no need to respond."

Susan Cox Powell was last seen early on Dec. 7. About 12:30 a.m., Josh Powell said he took his two young boys camping in a remote area of Tooele County. Temperatures that night were below freezing. Police were called later that afternoon when neither Powell showed up for work and their children were not dropped off at day care. When Josh Powell returned home, police were already at his house investigating.

Powell remains the sole person of interest in his wife's disappearance.
